Typhoon Haiyan Forces 750,000 From Homes

PHILADELPHIA -

A record-setting typhoon has slammed into the Philippines with winds nearly 190 mph, sending people running for their lives.

The powerful storm has forced thousands from their homes, leaving them without power and communication.

Typhoon Haiyan, a category-five storm, reportedly brought waves as high as 19 feet. Trees have been uprooted. And more than 750,000 residents have been forced from their homes.

On Friday, FOX 29's Shawnette Wilson stopped by Olde St. Augustine Church in Old City Philadelphia, where they have a large number of Pilipino parishioners.

A church leader said during last Sunday's service they started taking up a collection for members who have family in the Philippines. The video coming in from there illustrates just how difficult a recovery that will be.

Aerial images show why Haiyan is being called the strongest typhoon on record to make landfall. Flooding is so severe that neighborhoods look like the oceans as everything washes away.

Winds up to 190 mph hurled debris from the ground to the air. Trees are down everywhere, even on top of cars, halting relief efforts.

Video from the Philipines shows damaging winds blowing out windows in homes and buildings, which is the reason many people moved to safer ground in shelters ahead of the storm.

Others tried but failed to secure their homes.

Power lines are destroyed and phone lines remain down.

The worst of the devastation is the loss of life from the typhoon with the death toll is predicted to rise once communication and relief efforts are back up.

Early reports say some of those deaths involve people being electrocuted, struck by lightning or hit by falling trees.
