Flight honors 4 Pearl Harbor survivors

MESA, Ariz. -

Four veterans were honored in Mesa Thursday.  These courageous men were at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese launched a surprise attack on Dec. 7, 1941.

Now these vets are getting a chance to fly above the skies of Arizona!

These four veterans received a special honor flight at the Commemorative Air Force Museum.

Secretary of State Ken Bennett was on hand as they shared their memories from Pearl Harbor.

"Every time a plane would take off, somebody would holler under the pool table," said Lambert Modder.

"I'm just happy that I'm still alive, walking around, enjoying life," said Nelson Mitchell.

The four veterans boarded a restored World War II plane known as the Sentimental Journey. -- a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bomber.

"I'm an ex-airline pilot in civilian life.. Pearl Harbor.. I was flying a BBY out of Catalina flying post," said Jack Holder.  I've had a lot of time in a B-24.  I've never been in a B-17, but it's an honor just to be invited."

The museum honored these courageous servicemen who fought to preserve our freedoms.

Thursday's honor flight over the deserts of Arizona was a small gesture of appreciation to these men for their service.

"Flight was really nice.  A little noisy, but then you didn't have your mufflers," said Modder.

"Flight was amazing, it was very loud and we stayed at low elevations so you could see a lot," said Bennett.

It's all part of a weekend of events for Veteran's Day -- just another chance to take a sentimental journey.

Events at the Commemorative Air Force Museum continue this weekend to honor our veterans.  A dinner Friday evening, then the Gathering of Legends on Saturday.  A cadet memorial event is scheduled for Sunday.
