Two Injured In Hit And Run Accident At Bus Stop

East Los Angeles, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) Two people were injured today at a bus stop in East Los Angeles when a large white GMC Yukon jumped a curb, slammed into a bus bench and ended up against a retaining wall.

The collision occurred at 5:18 p.m. at Atlantic and Whittier boulevards, said California Highway Patrol Officer Tony Polizzi. The driver was described as a man in his late 20s who was last seen fleeing north on Atlantic from Whittier. He was wearing blue jeans and a white or gray sweat shirt, Polizzi said.

The Yukon had been going east on Whittier at an "unknown high rate of speed" and went through the intersection in the wrong direction, CHP Officer Gerard Diaz said.

A 31-year-old woman who was walking east on the sidewalk was struck. The Yukon then continued out of control on the sidewalk, hit a Metro bus stop shelter, and ran over a 56-year-old man from Valley Center. He ended up under the SUV and Los Angeles County firefighters had to lift the vehicle up to get that person out.

Some witnesses said the hit-and-run driver ran, carrying a child or infant in his arms.

Both of those hit had major injuries, Diaz said.

From Gina Silva:

A mangled mess is all that's left of a bus shelter at the intersection of Whittier and Atlantic Boulevards in East LA.  It's amazing that no one was killed in this horrific crash.

It all went down Wednesday afternoon around 5:20 pm. Witnesses say the driver of a GMC Yukon was speeding when he jumped the curb and drove onto the sidewalk.  He struck a woman walking with her boyfriend. She was tossed into the air and reportedly suffered severe head injuries. The driver kept going then struck a second person, a man who was waiting for the bus.  That victim was pinned between the SUV and the bus stop which was pushed approximately 20 feet. Witnesses say his legs were crushed. But instead of helping, CHP officers say the driver grabbed a child from the SUV, blended in with the crowd then took off running. He is described as a hispanic male in his 20's. He was wearing jeans and a white or gray shirt.  Authorities say the SUV wasn't stolen and they don't have any evidence that alcohol was involved.

This could have been just a horrible accident but since the driver took off, it is now a felony hit and run. The driver faces a number of charges.
