Minneapolis election results recap

Posted: Updated:

Minneapolis had no election night winner in its mayoral race, as votes will be redistributed by the ranked choice voting system.

Betsy Hodges claimed 28,935 first place votes, with Mark Andrew getting 19,584. No other candidate had more than 10,000 first place votes out of the 80,101 ballots cast.

Abdi Warsame unseated Robert Lilligren in Ward 6 to become the city's first Somali-American councilmember.

Voter turnout was exceptionally high this year in Ward 6, as East African voters put pen to paper in support of Warsame, who received 64 percent of first-place votes. Lilligren failed to keep the seat he has occupied for 12 years, despite the Ojibwe councilman's assurances he could connect with the Minneapolis' East African community.

Seven new members will be sworn into the Minneapolis City Council this year. Three of the city's 13 wards had no election night winner.

Minneapolis voters overwhelmingly adopted a pair of amendments to the city charter, which simplify and modernize the language of the document.

Question 1: Shall the Minneapolis City Charter be amended in the form of a complete revision which (1) modernizes the Charter; (2) redrafts its provisions for brevity and in plain language; (3) reorganizes the Charter into nine articles, and groups related provisions together; (4) removes from the Charter certain provisions for possible enactment into ordinance; and (5) retains the current role and relationships of City boards and commissions? ADOPTED (52,225 Yes votes / 13,338 No votes)

Question 2: Shall the Minneapolis City Charter provisions relating to the sale of liquor and wine be amended by reorganizing and rewriting in plain modern language? ADOPTED (57,980 Yes votes / 9,556 No votes)
