College Locked Down After Police Chase

Posted: Updated:
BLUE BELL, Pa. -

SWAT teams converged on Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell Monday morning in pursuit of two masked gunmen who were caught on tape as they pulled off a daring early morning robbery at this local tavern and escaped.

The overnight pursuit and campus search came after the 1:30 am robbery at the Whitpain Tavern about a mile away.

The masked gunmen held up patrons and employees, they also made off with cash and a safe, and then jumped into a red Ford Mustang.

An employee hit the panic alarm and police chased the suspects, even laying down stop strips to halt their getaway car.

"The vehicle crashed and two black male suspects ran from the vehicle," Sgt. Penecale said.

"I don't understand why they would pick a tavern to rob. It doesn't make any sense. It's a family oriented place, "said student Ronald Snodgrass.

SWAT teams were called in and the college campus was locked down. Students were told not to report to classes until noon while the entire campus was searched.

"I'm kind of scared. I have another class at 1:30. I'm gonna cancel that class. I'm not gonna go to the class," one student told Fox 29

"I just drove all the way up here, now I gotta drive all the way back to Abington," Snodgrass said.

Hours later the search was called off. Students returned to campus around noon. Neighbors in the area were warned to be careful leaving their homes while police searched.

Meanwhile detectives gathered evidence back at the Whitpain Tavern which has a sophisticated surveillance camera system around the entire bar. No one here wanted to comment. Police are hopeful these surveillance photos will lead them to the gunmen and a quick arrest.

"That's the goal," Penecale added.

"I'm glad everyone's safe and no one's hurt," Snodgrass said.

Police did not recover the safe that was taken from the bar. Anyone with information should call Whitpain Township Police at 610-279-9033.
