Atlanta mayor offers summit on flag flap

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed has extended an olive branch to veterans upset about a flag display on a public street.

Members of the American Legion Post 233 say they're frustrated that their repeated appeals to get an American flag exhibited correctly have been ignored at City Hall. They say a U.S. flag is being improperly displayed on a sign overlooking Andrew Young International Boulevard.  The flag is painted vertically with the union in the upper right corner.

"That symbol there should be reversed. The union should be on the top left as seen by the observer," said American Legion member and flag expert John Bushwack.

City officials had contended that there wasn't a problem with the way the flag was displayed. The American Legion members note that because it is a sign and not a two-sided traditional flag, the rules are different.

American Legion member Chuck Bagley said that he thought Public Works Commissioner Richard Mendoza had indicated that the sign would be changed.

In an email back in June, Mendoza wrote to a subordinate, "Get us a quote and fix this flag." Months later, the display remains unchanged.

Reed said he's willing to hold a summit between city officials and the American Legion Post members to decide the issue.
