It's been entirely too long since I last sat down and hit the keyboard for the FLOG. I have been asked by several if and when, the comeback would ever happen.
Today is the day.
Like I do every morning, I peruse Twitter and Facebook to see what I had missed in the seven or so hours that I find myself in slumber.
Today was a morning that sent my boxing loving backside for a complete loop.
Matt Vanda posted on his facebook page-
"Good times last nite with my girls. Trick or treat. Smell my feet Tony bonsante is going to get his ass beat. You shouldn't of called me out you fat bitch. January 25 its on like donkey Kong...."
Vanda and Bonsante changed the trajectory of boxing in the state when they packed the Target Center on January 12th, 2007. It was a fight years in the making that proved when letting a fight build between two guys who absolutely hate each other boxing can still be king.
Bonsante hasn't stepped into the ring since 2010 when he lost to Bobby Kliewer and Vanda has teased retirement a couple of times but the fire still obviously burns in the Predator following his first round TKO of Brooke Wellby. From reports, Bonsante had a ring side seat for that fight and the 43 year old openly said he'd like another piece of Vanda.
When I talked to Vanda prior to his fight against Caleb Truax, I asked him about not getting the rematch he wanted against Bonsante. He said that for the most part he was at peace with not being given the opportunity and that he didn't really hate Bonsante. My take away from our conversation was that as he looking back at his career, he was trying to find peace with not having what he views as closure with the Bullet. If January 25th happens, he'll get the closure he is looking for.
So…seven years after the first war, I guess we're about to do it again. In his fight against Truax, I asked Jake Wegner if there was ever a possibility of a rematch. When he answered no, I thought long and hard about what it was that I was looking for. Was I looking for the actual fight, or was I looking for the build-up and feeling that comes with it. The truth is the first fight wasn't close and the reality is that both fighters are in a completely different place then they were seven years ago.
I have exchanged emails and text messages this morning with many in the fight game and have asked the same question each time. Why now for Bonsante?
Maybe he feels like he still has something to prove, maybe he's bored. That question will be answered over the next two months if this fight happens. My guess is that as he sat ringside he watched Matt dominate and convinced himself that he could not only compete with, but beat Vanda again.
Big 2014 for Truax:
2013 was the biggest year to date for Caleb Truax. He went 3-0 with wins over Vanda, Don George on ESPN and Cerresso Fort which took care of the back yard. Now ranked in the top 10 in the world, Truax has his sights on a bigger prize, bringing a world title to Minnesota.
Word is he'll be back in action early in 2014…more on his opponent and date as they are confirmed.
Truax spoke to the Osseo football team on Thursday after practice as the Orioles prepare for the Prior Lake Lakers and with a win, can advance to the state tournament.
We'll wait on bout confirmation, but Jungle Boy Boxing is throwing another card on Jan 25 at Black Bear Casino.
Seconds Out will have a big card in January as well with date and time to be confirmed soon.
