Hallmark is under fire after changing the words to a popular Christmas carol on an ornament.

The Kansas City greeting card company released an ornament of an "ugly Christmas sweater" donning the phrase "Don we now our FUN apparel!", the lyrics coming from the carol "Deck the Halls." The original lyrics read, "Don we now our gay apparel."

The company said Thursday it should not have changed the lyrics. The company initially responded by saying the multiple meanings attached to the word "gay" meant the sweater's lyrics would be "open to misinterpretation."

The company's Facebook page has received criticizing posts.
