OAK PARK, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A west suburban man who won $8.75 million in the Illinois Lottery is splitting his winnings with his uncle, who helped him come to the United States.

Souksavanh Phomphakoy bought a Lotto Quick Pick ticket at Clark Oak Park at 330 Chicago Ave. in Oak Park, according to a statement from the Illinois Lottery. The next day, his friend read in the newspaper that someone from Oak Park had won and told Phomphakoy to check this ticket.

He checked the numbers when he got home from work and realized he had won.

Phomphakoy plans on splitting the money with his uncle, who gave him the opportunity to study and learn English in the United States 10 years ago, according to the lottery.

"I could not have come here without my uncle's help and I am extremely grateful," Phomphakoy said in the statement.

Phomphakoy plans on using the rest of the money to buy a new house, enroll in additional courses at Triton College, and visit his parents in Laos.
