Judge Orders More Evidence In Teen Death

Posted: Updated:

A federal prosecutor will take another look at how a Georgia teen died.

17-year-old Kendrick Johnson was found dead at his high school, but there are conflicting reports whether he was suffocated or received a fatal blow.

Fox's Ainsley Earhardt has the story.

Some questions surrounding the death of a Georgia teen might finally be answered.

17-year-old Kendrick Johnson was found dead back in January. His body was wrapped inside a rolled-up wrestling mat in his high school gym.

Now a judge has ordered authorities to release all surveillance video taken in and around the school.

"We're happy to hear that we are one step closer to the truth," Kenneth Johnson, Kendrick's father said.

The teen's death was initially determined to be a freak accident, but his family thinks it's something else.

"I believe he was murdered," Jacquelyn Johnson, Kendrick's father said.

A private pathologist also concluded Johnson died from blunt force trauma and the fatal blow doesn't appear to be an accident.

The pathologist also discovered the teen's organs were missing at the time of his burial, but, police have considered this case closed and authorities say they withheld the video for months in an effort to protect the privacy of minors shown in the footage.

An attorney for the Johnson family says the circumstances surrounding this case make it an exception.

"If there was an assault that took place on that school grounds it was a criminal act as such it is not protected," Attorney Chevene King said.

The Johnson family hopes the video will show who was in the gymnasium at the same time their son was likely providing more clues to exactly how the teen died and possibly a renewed investigation.

"If the manner and cause of this is changed to homicide then I think an investigation will have to be done." Johnson Family Attorney, Ben Crump said.
