Proposed Kennesaw smoking ban won't include e-cigs

Posted: Updated:
KENNESAW, Ga. -

A proposed ban on smoking at most places in Kennesaw won't include electronic cigarettes.

In a work session on Wednesday, the Kennesaw City Council took e-cigarettes out of an ordinance that would prohibit smoking from all city property and most businesses.

The proposal was put forth last month by City Council member Cris Welsh. Several constituents said they opposed e-cigarettes being part of the ban. E-cigarettes emit only water vapor, contain no tar and do not produce smoke.

Business owner David Owens, who sells cigarettes, told FOX 5's George Franco, "I'm a big believer in what Thomas Jefferson wrote down, the ability to have life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

Council member Welsh said, "There's a line somewhere between personal health and personal freedoms and we need to figure out where that line is."

Another work session is scheduled in two weeks, after which the Council hopes to have a proposal in place. A public forum will then be scheduled.
