Vineland Student Killed Walking To School

VINELAND, N.J. -

Shock and sadness at a South Jersey High School today after a classmate was killed on her way to school.

14--year-old Alexa Strittmatter was hit by two vehicles just before dawn.

FOX 29's Bruce Gordon talked to fellow students who can't believe she's gone, but says they will never forget her.

Vineland High School is in mourning, the community has lost a young teen to a seemingly random accident. Strittmater was on her way to school this morning and she never made it.

Vineland Firefighters returned to the accident scene mid-afternoon to cleanse South Main Road of the circles and dotted lines painted by investigators to better understand what happened there, but they could not wash away the sorrow for those who knew or knew of the 14-year-old.

Some classes had a moment of silence for her. It was just a sad kind of atmosphere today.

Police say Strittmatter was with her 16-year-old and sister on their way to the bus stop and in front of their own home when she entered South Main and was struck by one vehicle and then another.

Both drivers were there when officers arrived and both drivers have been cooperative. No charges were filed.

Friends, who shared pictures of Alexa from social media, described her as a good dancer and a huge fan of the band One Direction.

Grief Counselors were on hand at the high school to deal with the sadness of sudden loss.

Theatre classes are hoping to organize a January benefit to raise money for a scholarship in Alexa's honor.

They're hoping for help from her favorite band by trending #1dforalexa on Twitter.
