Sophie Nélisse: Books Help You Get Out Of The World

Posted: Updated:

"Sophie Nélisse steals 'The Book Thief.'

That's what USA Today says about the 13-year-old who plays the title role in this movie.  She won the job after a worldwide search.  (Actually, she was only 12 when she got the role; she turned 13 just as filming began last March.)

"There were so many big actors (already cast) I thought they'd say, 'Oh, she's not very good.' " says the young French-Canadian actress. "But after the first week they found that I was not that bad."

Her Oscar-winning co-star Geoffrey Rush can't seem to stop raving about her.  "I've had the opportunity in my career to have played opposite some extraordinary actresses and Sophie is just a true, natural original," says Rush. "She's a gifted performer who has an instinctive and highly creative rapport with the lens."

"She is an absolutely hilarious clown," Rush adds. "In between takes she would have me rolling on the floor laughing my (butt) off. There were some tough scenes to do, but she would always prick the bubble after and make me laugh."

Born and raised in Liverpool, signed by an inexperienced agent named Brian Epstein, hustled into the studio with a genius producer named George Martin...and out of that session came a hit song called "Do You Want To Know A Secret." Now here's the twist…we're not talking about The Beatles.
