HEALTH INSURANCE: What to know about policy cancellations
Many Americans are receiving notice that their current health insurance plans are being canceled. Several companies have decided to cancel individual health insurance policies for 2014 because Obamacare requires more extensive coverage.
Fox 9 medical expert Dr. Archelle Georgiou explains what's going on behind some health insurance companies' decision to cancel individual health insurance policies for 2014.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER
-People with pre-existing conditions may not have been covered up until now. Pre-existing illnesses can't be excluded, but the network of hospitals and doctors is shrinking, which means it's important to understand which hospitals and doctors are considered "in-network" when shopping for coverage.
- Originally, the law required that you should be able to prove you had coverage as of Jan. 1, 2014. That deadline is now March 31.
-If you don't have coverage from an employer, the federal government through Medicare, Medicaid or CHIPS or veterans care, you have to sign up.
