Harvey Weinstein & Amir Bar-Lev: We Captured An Unforgettable Night

Posted: Updated:

Harvey Weinstein and director Amir Bar-Lev are working together again...this time releasing a new documentary directed by Amir called "12-12-12". It goes behind the scenes of last years's Madison Square Garden concert, organized by Harvey, to raise money for victims of Hurricane Sandy. Cameras caught everyone from the Rolling Stones to Bruce Springsteen backstage, gearing up for what would turn out to be a very long night.

Amir: "All of the artists were extraordinarily genuinely disarmed. You see them and their generosity. There was only 5 weeks to plan this thing...you don't get the feeling you're dealing with performers, you get the feeling you're dealing with real people being extraordinarily generous"

Harvey: "We made 2 great decisions. Number one. Do that event which made 50 million dollars and money continues to pour in and all the money has gone into the streets, fixing houses... and the second thing was hiring Amir with Paul McCartney to produce this concert, because Amir comes at it from a completely different point of view."

Harvey credits the involvement of a certain legendary musician for not only attracting everyone to the event but also keeping egos in check.

"The minute you have Paul McCartney, first of all he's the most generous and people will follow him anywhere. Second he's a Beatle and third there's nobody who's gonna say I'm closing...Paul McCartney closes. He's the man. That's that. Even the Stones know Paul McCartney closes."

"12-12-12" opens in theaters in LA and New York this Friday.

Fun Facts About Harvey Weinstein (Source: Wikipedia)

1) He is an American film producer and film studio executive. He is best known as co-founder of Miramax Films. He and his brother Bob have been co-chairmen of The Weinstein Company, their film production company, since 2005. He won an Academy Award for producing Shakespeare in Love, and garnered seven Tony Awards for producing a variety of winning plays and musicals including The Producers, Billy Elliot the Musical, and August: Osage County.

2) Weinstein, his brother Bob, and Corky Burger, independently produced rock concerts as Harvey & Corky Productions in Buffalo through most of the 1970s. Both Weinstein brothers had grown up with a passion for movies and they nurtured a desire to enter the film industry.

3) In the late 1970s, using profits from their concert promotion business, the brothers created a small independent film distribution company called Miramax, named after their parents - Miriam and Max. The company's first releases were primarily music-oriented concert films such as Paul McCartney's Rockshow.

4) In the early 1980s Miramax acquired the rights to two British films of benefit shows filmed for human rights organization Amnesty International. Working closely with Martin Lewis, the producer of the original films, the Weinstein brothers edited the two films into one movie tailored for the American market. The resulting film was released as The Secret Policeman's Other Ball in May 1982 and it became Miramax's first hit. The movie raised considerable sums for Amnesty International and was credited by Amnesty with having helped to raise its profile in the US.

‘12-12-12' opens on November 15th.
