The 27-year-old South Dakota man accused of second-degree murder in the death of Adrian Peterson's 2-year-old son is now out on bail.
The family of Joseph Patterson paid $750,000 to have him released from jail, where he had been held following the death of Tyrese Robert Ruffin earlier this month. Patterson entered a not guilty plea on Monday.
Patterson is accused of beating the toddler to death while watching the boy in the Sioux Falls apartment where the boy and his mother lived. Officials say Patterson had been dating her and was alone with the boy at the time.
The boy's official cause of death was listed as an abusive head injury, and Patterson's criminal history includes convictions of assaulting a previous girlfriend and her toddler.
The trial is set for February, but Patterson must return to court on Jan. 13.
