PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. -

Disturbing new details about a 12-year-old boy's death wererevealed in a court hearing in Paulding County on Tuesday.

Shayaa Forbes is charged with murder and child cruelty in the violent death of his son Eric.

In a court hearing on Tuesday, Paulding County Detective Kevin Morgan described in detail the injuries that Eric Forbes suffered in the days leading up to the boy's death on Oct. 11. Injuries found on the boy included swollen and bruised legs, bruised feet, toenails broken in half, lacerations and bite marks, according to the detective.

Morgan told Paulding Circuit Chief Judge Tonny Beavers that he interviewed Shayaa Forbes about the signs of abuse while the 12-year-old was in the hospital. He says the 32-year-old father had initially said he found his son in the bathtub, but later admitted he spanked the boy because of low grades on a progress report.

According to the detective, the cause of Eric's death was determined to be battered child syndrome, which was a culmination of all his injuries.

The detective also revealed several teachers tried to intervene last year when they saw signs of trouble. Five teachers from his school reported what they believed to be physical abuse. Out of those five cases, the Department of Family and Children Services took three of them, it was revealed in court.

The judge granted Shayaa Forbes a $30,000 bond.
