Traffic spike expected on Ga 400 once tolls gone

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - State officials are expecting an increase in traffic on Georgia 400 once workers finish demolishing a toll plaza on the busy road in metro Atlanta.

The Georgia Department of Transportation says getting rid of the fees could add 11,000 vehicles to the road per day.

The road links Atlanta with its northern suburbs, but some drivers avoid it because of the .50-cent toll and traffic backups.

Crews are starting work to demolish the toll plaza this weekend. In all, the four-phase project is expected to take about a year as workers also remove signs and restripe the highway.

The governor's office announced an end to the toll last year. The charge is expected to end sometime in November.
