Ex-DeKalb County police officer denies molestation charge

Posted: Updated:
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

A former DeKalb County police officer vows to clear his name after he was accused of molesting a 13-year-old girl.

Manuel Williams served for 18 years before he resigned on Wednesday. Authorities said Williams had inappropriately touched a friend of his daughter's in September of 2012. The allegations came to light after the girl's parents told authorities on Oct. 12 of this year.

Williams held a news conference on Friday at his lawyer's office where he denied any improper conduct.

"I did not confess to any improper or illegal conduct of any sexual nature to anyone," Williams said. "I firmly look forward to my day in court of vindication."

Williams said an innocent hug has been misconstrued.

"How you can confuse someone making an innocent contact of a hug nature into child molestation, so I don't understand how you could make that leap to full confession," said Gerald Griggs, Williams' attorney. "It was never a full confession; what there was cooperation by a dedicated officer."

The former officer says that detectives used over-the-top tactics when they were interviewing him and he says that is why he resigned. He said they threatened to fire him if he did submit his resignation.
