DeKalb County sheriff's deputies honored

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

Three DeKalb County sheriff's deputies were honored on Thursday for their bravery when a heavily armed man terrorized a Decatur elementary school back in August.

Fugitive Squad investigator Solomon Daniels and his colleagues were serving a criminal warrant two minutes away from McNairy Discovery Learning Academy when a 911 call came in about a man with an assault rifle. They were on the scene almost immediately. The suspect, Michael Brandon Hill, fired a shot into the air when he saw them.

DeKalb County Sheriff Thomas Brown presented Daniels and Deputies Terrance Wortham and Jarod Hunt with the Sheriff's Service Cross -- the department's second highest award.

"They should be commended for their act of bravery while confronting an armed suspect who had an assault rifles and over 400 rounds of ammunition," Brown said.

All three men have more than a decade in law enforcement and say they relied on their training and the experience of hunting dangerous fugitives every day.

"It really showed the professionalism that these guys have, the commitment they have to this community and the bravery in which they're willing to put their own lives to the side to step in and help their fellow man," Brown said.

While they're used to working in the shadows, the deputies said they appreciate the recognition.

"I thank the sheriff and the chief for acknowledging what we did, but it was really just another day's work," Wortham said.

"We do this all the time -- maybe not on this magnitude -- but we go and deal with dangerous people, like the sheriff said, all the time," Daniels said.

The honor itself is rare. Sheriff Brown said that this is only the third time he's given the Sheriff's Service Cross award in his 13 years in charge.
