October Moisture Improving Drought

Posted: Updated:

With rainfall, and yes even snowfall, coming in at or above average over the last few weeks, the drought that the summer brought to the area is beginning to improve. No Minnesota counties are in what's considered a severe drought anymore with scattered pockets of dry and moderately dry conditions. Areas of western Wisconsin though are still in poor shape with severe drought holding strong right along the I-94 corridor. The United States as a whole has been improving for the last couple of months showing a far more meager widespread drought then what was there this time last year. But clearly, many areas are still in need of moisture, including our neck of the woods. Here are the precipitation totals so far for the month of October followed by the departure from average.

The further west you go, the more moisture you have experienced this month thanks mostly to the large storm that brought feet of snow to the Black Hills of South Dakota a few weeks ago. But there is a bright side if you are looking for more moisture. A large trough will be digging into the Rocky Mountains as we head into early next week which is a good set up for stormy conditions across much of the central U.S. Not the greatest news if you are looking for some sunshine. Below are the current drought conditions in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
