A Sandstone, Minn. daycare provider pleaded guilty to child neglect after admitting to drinking vodka and taking prescription cough syrup the same day a toddler under her watch wandered into traffic on a neighboring highway.
According to charges, Carrie Richardson, 56, admitted she didn't know she was only watching 9 of the 10 children until informed by a sheriff's deputy 21-month-old Kaylee Matson had left the premises. She was initially charged with child neglect and child endangerment but the second charged was dropped. Both are gross misdemeanors.
The toddler left an outdoor playground area and made her way to Highway 23 where a 13-year-old boy who saw cars swerving to avoid her rescued her.
Richardson told police she drank vodka and took the cough medication because she was "having a bad day." A preliminary breath test measured her BAC at 0.114 percent. She initially said she had three or four glasses of wine but couldn't produce the bottle and eventually admitted she had been drinking vodka since the early afternoon.
