Domestic abuse survivor Josh Safran dedicates life to helping victims

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

October is Domestic Abuse Month. It can happen to anyone: Men, women, children of all backgrounds. One in four women are affected, and it's happening to people you know right now.

Josh Safran is an author, attorney and nationally recognized advocate for survivors of domestic violence. He is also a domestic abuse survivor. He chronicled his journey from fear to action in his new memoir "Free Spirit."

Safran joined Good Day Chicago Thursday morning to talk about his upbringing and how the events of his life led him to where he is now.

He explained how his mother met and married a man who was a violent alcoholic, when Safran was only nine years old. He used to cry and pace when the abuse started, but it changed the longer it went on. His mother eventually saw what the man was doing to her son, and got them out.

After Safran graduated from law school, he took on a case of a battered woman who was serving life for killing her batterer. His struggle to free her was profiled in a Sundance documentary "Crime after Crime."

Safran wanted to remind viewers that women and children are not the only victims of domestic abuse. Men are too. He impressed how important it is to help victims find their voice, and lend help when we can.

If you or someone you know needs help, please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233. If you are in immediate danger, please call 9-1-1.
