National Teen Driver Safety Week: Focus on better driving skills

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

This week is National Teen Driver Safety Week and there is a push across America to make the roads safer. Car crashes are the number one killer of young people ages 14-18 in the U.S.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched a new campaign asking parents to discuss critical driving practices with their teen driver.

One of the biggest distractions among teen drivers - is a cell phone.

"There are several distractions that we know take place in vehicles with teens and adults but cell phone use is a primary one and if teens can reduce the amount that they use the cell phone certainly when behind the wheel," Mike Speck said. "They shouldn't be doing that really at all. They'll find that their concentration is more based on the driving and because of that, again, the chances of being involved in a crash are reduced substantially."
