QUARTERBACK CAROUSEL: Switches send Vikings fans for a spin - KMSP-TV

Vikings quarterback carousel 'laughable'

In a season that has seen several quarterback switch-ups, many Vikings fans tell FOX 9 News the revolving door has them feeling a little dizzy and they wonder if the team will ever settle on a single caller.

After Monday night's disaster, many fans are wondering what crazy thing could happen next. Wednesday's announcement that Christian Ponder may be starting on Sunday created another episode of quarterback whiplash for fans.

There have been several changes over the past four weeks. Ponder started for the first few games of the season, but when he got hurt, Matt Cassel stepped in to throw for two. The sudden signing of Josh Freeman came as a shock to many, but after his debut against The Giants, it looks like he'll be out.

Head Coach Leslie Frazier announced that concussion-like symptoms will likely keep Freeman from the field. With a short week, that means Ponder is back on deck. He says he's eager to prove himself, and has been practicing with the starters to be ready for the Sunday game against Green Bay.

With the Vikings coming full circle, fans vented on "The Ticket" sports radio on Wednesday afternoon. Many still don't believe he's the player who can turn the team's fortunes around.

Even the hosts -- former Viking Mike Morris and Pioneer Press Sports Writer Bob Sansavere -- aren't sure.

"I'm telling you, when Cassel steps on the field, he has a different command of the huddle," Morris said.

When it comes to Freeman's concussion, they're also not buying that line.

"It's laughable," Sansavere said.

Yet, even if it doesn't make sense, at least it's unprecedented.

"Never seen anything like this where they create an injury for the quarterback who needs to be injured at the time and bring someone else in to give them a shot, but the circus has rolled into town," Morris said.

The problem for the team is that weeks on a merry-go-round has many fans saying they're ready to jump off -- especially with the rival Packers coming to town. All said they hope the team can get their act together in time to salvage at least some of the season.
