Tech Check: Galaxy Gear

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The vision laid out in Get Smart, Inspector Gadget, Babylon 5, the Jetsons, Dick Tracy, The Power Rangers, Star Trek, Flash Gordon, Knight Rider and many science fiction series seems to be one step closer. This is according to the new Samsung Galaxy Gear Watch commercials that have been popping up all over the place the past month.

Maybe it will kill the mystic around so many stories with similar communication devices, but to the tech-savvy individual, the future is now. Well, it is sort of here at least. The wearable device still has to connect to your smart phone through Bluetooth, but it's the step in a really exciting tech innovation.

The device also isn't your ordinary Bluetooth device. Its special security lock only allows it to only work with a handful of devices. At its launch, it only was compatible with the Galaxy Note 3, Samsung promises it will work with the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3 and Note 2 once they release a special software update. They also say that they have plans to explore expanding its use to several Android-based devices.

The wearable device allows users to answer incoming calls, respond verbally to texts, make calendar appointments and even take pictures without fishing your phone out of your pocket or purse. It is equipped with a 1.9 megapixel camera and shoots 720 high definition video.

The downside is that there are no third-party apps that allow it to work with email or social media platforms yet, but it will alert you to new notification on those apps and will even prompt your smart device to open to it when you get it out.

But one big plus is that it has a built-in pedometer, so consumers in the market for a Fitbit, Jawbone or similar device and has a Galaxy or Note, might want to put that money towards the Galaxy Gear instead.

The Gear comes in a variety of colors and can be a bit bulky for those with smaller wrists, but it is something that has to be tried on to see if it is the right fit.

It is available through all major phone carriers and runs between $299 and $399 with a service plan.
