HERO coverage extended into Douglas County

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. -

The Georgia Department of Transportation has expanded its Highway Emergency Response Operator units' coverage area to west of metro Atlanta.

The idea is to keep Interstate 20 clear of disabled vehicles and free of traffic westbound to Douglas County.

The northbound route extends into Bartow, Cherokee, Fulton and Hall counties. The southbound route stretches down to Fulton and Henry counties. HERO units ride eastbound into DeKalb and Rockdale counties.

Douglasville Mayor Harvey Persons was happy to work with GDOT to get the coverage area expanded into his city.

"What we could do to get this process and this organization more involved in Douglasville and Douglas County just because of what it would do for our citizens that use I-20 every day," Persons said.

GDOT doesn't have traffic cameras on I-20.

HERO unit manager Michael Roberson says they're partnering with law enforcement in Douglas County to be their eyes on the road.

"This is our first expansion where we're going beyond our camera coverage. In order to do that, we needed a good local partner," Roberson said.  "Working with the city of Douglasville and the county, we found that partner."

The extension of the hero unit route into Douglas County has increased the coverage area to 310 miles in metro Atlanta.
