Widespread Freeze Looks Likely over the Weekend

Posted: Updated:

Running more than a week behind normal in many locations, a widespread freeze is looking more and more likely as we head through your weekend. A couple different cold fronts will be pushing through the Upper Midwest between now and Sunday which will bring even cooler temperatures to the state both Saturday and Sunday. As of right now, Saturday night could be our first widespread freeze with temperatures dipping to the 32 degree mark and even into the upper 20's in some spots. Now, with the unsettled pattern that we will be in the next week or so, overnight temperatures may have a tough time falling below freezing because of the added cloud cover which acts like a blanket to keep the atmosphere warmer than it otherwise would be. So here's the rub… if the clouds hang around Saturday night, it may be just enough to hold off our widespread freezing conditions.

So here is a look at a couple different forecasting computer models that we use. They both are showing colder air diving southward and a widespread freeze across much of the area. I have a black dot that encompasses the metro with freezing conditions outlined with the dark blue line.

In both of these computer models, widespread temperatures around or under 30 degrees are expected across Minnesota and Wisconsin. To go one step further… a forecasting model devoted entirely to temperatures shows its expected lows for dozens of cities across the country and it shows below freezing temperatures for even metro locations.

With a low of 29, this would be the coldest we have been since the last week of April, yikes! Our current forecast puts lows in the central metro right around 30. Stay warm!
