Christian Ponder, who has been out three weeks with a rib injury, will be second on the depth chart.
Matt Cassel's prospects of maintaining the starting job evaporated Sunday in a 35-10 home loss to the Carolina Panthers. Cassel had 241 yards passing with one touchdown and two interceptions, two weeks after leading the Vikings to their first win of the season in London.
Freeman started the first three games of the season in Tampa Bay before he was cut and replaced by rookie Mike Glennon. In five NFL seasons, Freeman has started 59 games and has thrown for 13,534 yards and 80 career touchdowns.
