Summit held on synthetic drugs in Bremen

Posted: Updated:
BREMEN, Ga. -

Dozens of people gathered in Bremen, Ga. for the second annual "Synthetic Drug Summit" on Tuesday.

Mexican cartels have established Atlanta and its surrounding areas as a major drug distribution point. The Justice Department has identified north Georgia as a "high intensity drug trafficking area."

Law enforcement, first-responders, local businesses and concerned residents met to discuss the synthetic drug problem.

The summit was organized by Lance Dyer, whose son Dakota died after smoking Spice, or synthetic marijuana, last year in Bremen.

"Nineteen months ago today this fight began for us.  In the building behind you is where we buried our son that day," Dyer said.

Dyer, devastated by his son's death, wants to make law enforcement, parents and the judicial system aware of new information and technology to help combat the synthetic drug industry.

One goal of the summit is to enable officers in the field the ability to run tests for otherwise hard-to-detect illegal substances and make arrests on the spot.

"By analyzing the substance and know right away exactly what it is, you can proceed from there because you basically have a lab technology that's analyzed the substance," said Michael Nagle of Thermo Scientific.

Dyer and his wife don't want any other parent to suffer through the intense pain of losing a child the way they did. They offered advice to anyone who suspects their child using a synthetic substance.

"Seek medical attention immediately.  Don't wait, don't worry about what the neighbors think," Lance Dyer said. "Don't worry about what's going to be said.  This stuff can kill your child.  It can kill your child and there is nothing you can do to stop it."

Through their foundation, the Dyers have donated a vehicle to be used by law enforcement in their efforts to crack down on synthetic substance abuse. It will be dedicated at the state Capitol in January.
