FIRST WINTER OUTLOOKS ARE OUT

Posted: Updated:
Meteorologist Steve Frazier Meteorologist Steve Frazier

A cooler than normal week is underway here in the Upper Midwest and soon even colder air will spill in to our neck of the woods. The crisp mornings and peak fall colors have most of us thinking that winter is not far behind. Officially winter does not arrive until the 3rd week in December, but here in the Upper Midwest, Old Man Winter can come knocking months earlier. Below are a few highlights of what we can expect come "Winter 2013-2014".

It looks like we will get our winter in a series of shots of cold air as the jet stream will want to hang south of us for most of the upcoming winter season. The Jetstream separates the cold air to the north form the warmer air to the south, so winter cold can hang around into the spring.

The jet stream is also the storm track, so systems will ride it to our south, putting us in a favorable position for multiple shots of cold from the north and moisture from the south. These shots of cold air will also feed the snow machine across our neck of the woods as a warmer than normal North Pacific will provide the moisture needed for the flakes to fly.

Of course it's early, but this is what the overall pattern is shaping up to be. Stay Tuned!
