High school figure skater puts on 'Skatemare on Ice' to give back

Posted: Updated:

As a high school senior balancing several college classes and a skating career, Daniel Kulenkamp is not your average 18-year-old.

"It's one of my favorite things to do obviously... otherwise I would not be this devoted," says Kulenkamp.

Figuring skating from the time he was just four years old, Kulenkamp started competing when he was 11.

"We put him on skates because I was a high school hockey coach and wanted him to play hockey" says his dad, David Kulenkamp. He feel in love with the show the first year and then it's history."

Last year, he placed fifth at Nationals and continues to work toward his dream of going to the Olympics, but as all skaters know the expense of ice times, travel, coaches and costumes all come at a price.

"It's a big sacrifice we both have extra jobs. 2nd, 3rd jobs to make sure he gets there," David Kulenkamp said.

To give back, Kulenkamp decided to put together a fundraiser he's calling Skatemare. His goal is to help some of the groups that have helped him along the, especially the Minnesota Skating Scholarship Fund

Skatemare will feature 30 skaters from all over the twin cities ranging from 8 years old to adults.

"We've got so many rinks here in the cities you'd think we were all kinda connected…not really," says Kulenkamp. "We're all kinda separate and it's so nice to finally pull everyone together."

"I'm really proud of him because when he came and said he wanted to do this I said it will be your show -- I will help with the choreography, and he's taken it and ran with it and it's going to be great," says his coach, Rose Esteb.

The show includes local talent from kids as young as 8 years old to one of Daniel's coaches, former Olympian Caryn Kadavy.

The money raised will be divided between the Minnesota Skating Scholarship Fund, Hearts for Charity and Hand to Hand.
