Dr. Mike: Food Warning For Pregnant Women

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Pregnant women are being warned of an increased miscarriage risk from food heated in plastic.

The study – which is being presented Monday at American Society for Reproductive Medicine's annual conference in Boston – also says certain chemicals can increase the risk of a miscarriage by 80 percent.

The work is not nearly enough to prove a link, but it adds to "the biological plausibility" that BPA might affect fertility and other aspects of health, researchers say.

Pregnant women are being urged to avoid canned foods and plastic bottles left in the sun.

Dr. Mike Cirigliano, of the University of Pennsylvania, joined "Good Day Philadelphia" on Monday morning to help us understand this one.

Also, if you think steroids are reserved for professional athletes, think again. Your kids may also be using the dangerous substances to get an edge in the game.

A large number of young people are using steroids to help athletically and socially. Kids are using both anabolic steroids and human growth hormone.

And 8 percent of men ages 18 to 25 admit to taking appearance- and performance-enhancing drugs.

Dr. Mike talked with Mike Jerrick and Sheinelle Jones about this report, as well.
