Riverton Police: First Murder In Over 40 Years

Posted: Updated:

A woman was found dead early Sunday morning on Carriage House Lane in the middle of the street between Lippincott and Thomas avenues in Riverton.

Police say a woman was shot to death in what is now the borough's first homicide in 40 years. Residents of Riverton are stunned.

It's might as well be a scene straight out of Norman Rockwell, a place where yachts pepper the shoreline where kid toss rocks in the Delaware. It's certainly not a place where you hear of a murder.

Helen Hughes lives about 100 yards away from where police say a woman's body was found in the middle of this very quiet residential street.

Riverton Police are not saying who the woman was or where she lived.

"Riverton is the sweetest kindest most gentle neighborhood," Helen Hughes said. "We're still in shock..things like that don't happen here"

"I'm concerned because I want to know what happened and why this poor woman was shot," Jeanne Jarinmooney of Palmyra said.

One woman who didn't want to go on camera tells FOX 29 she heard 3 gunshots minutes before the victims was found.

Residents here believe the victim may not be from the neighborhood.

"My guess is it's somebody from out of town and they saw a nice quiet spot and unfortunately something went bad," Helen Hughes/Riverton

So far there are no arrests in the case. If you have any information that would help police you are asked to call the Burlington County Prosecutor's office at 609-265-7113.
