Treatment center hopes 'Glee' star's death shines light on addiction

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

As "Glee" fans mourned the loss of one of the show's stars on Thursday, a local treatment center hopes the actor's untimely death can serve as a warning sign to local addicts.

Corey Monteith was remembered in a "Glee" episode entitled "The Quarterback." The 31-year-old actor died of a heroin and alcohol overdose in a Vancouver hotel room back in July.

For Jordon, an Afghan War veteran and recovering heroin addict, Monteith's death was a familiar reminder of the devastating effects of drug addiction.

"Junkies die every day, to be honest with you," Jordon said. "It's something that you see a lot. Every couple of months I'm going to a funeral."

Now two years sober, Jordon said he remembers being in and out of jail, stealing from his parents and doing anything for his next fix.

Rusty Gray, the vice-president of clinical services at St. Jude's Recovery Center in Atlanta, said he helps treat about 1,300 addicts a year. Some -- like Jordon -- are success stories. Many are not.

"There's a lot of people that live everyday lives that struggle with this,"  Gray said.
Experts say heroin has transitioned into the suburbs.

Heroin we are told is no longer the stereo-typical drug of say twenty years ago, it has transitioned into the suburbs.

"The large increase we've seen is the younger kids in the suburbs," Gray said. "Kids that may look to be doing OK in high school, but you may see certain things slipping."

Jordon said he turned to heroin when the high from prescriptions like oxycodone was not enough. Now he hopes the death of Corey Monteith sends a message to kids who may emulate the Hollywood star. Jordon wants people to know that there can be life after addiction.

"If you're willing to try to do something about your life, you can get better," Jordon said. "It's not a death sentence."
