NIGHTMARE ON 4TH AVENUE: Richfield man collects Halloween costumes for charity

Posted: Updated:
RICHFIELD, Minn. (KMSP) -

A Richfield, Minn., man who has tasked himself with a laborious Halloween yard display wants every child, no matter his or her means, to have a costume to wear on Halloween night.

Ryan Ridgley labors over his elaborate Halloween decorations on the 7400 block of 4th Avenue, but the candy he hands out comes with a note encouraging kids to drop their costumes in a bin at the end of his driveway after Halloween is over to donate next year to families who can't afford costumes of their own.

Ridgley will spend about 100 hours setting up his display that has several life-size characters including Frankenstein, a mummy, a witch, a cemetery scene and a 13-foot spider web.

"Due to the hardships in my family growing up, I do not remember every really celebrating Halloween until I was adopted when I was 10. I was lucky to have been adopted by a family that could afford a costume for me every year. Some children are not so lucky," Ridgley said in a release.

The bin will be at the end of Ridgley's driveway for the week following Halloween and he plans to collect the costumes, clean them and sort them to be donated next fall to local charities.
