Falcons WR Julio Jones could be out for season

The news may just be getting worse for the Falcons. Less than 24 hours after a devastating loss to the New York Jets on Monday night, FOX Sports' Jay Glazer tweeted Tuesday afternoon that wide receiver Julio Jones may be done for the year.   Head coach Mike Smith confirmed the injury, but didn't give many details.

Just after 1 p.m., Glazer tweeted, "Falcons fear Julio Jones likely OUT for the rest of the year w/a foot injury. He's getting a second opinion tomorrow to determine."  A second tweet read,  "Initial determination by falcons is that Julio Jones season is over. They are hopeful 2nd opinion says otherwise but not optimistic."

In his regular press conference, Falcons head coach Mike Smith confirmed that Jones was hurt during Monday night's game, and that he had seen a doctor Tuesday morning.  Smith said Jones would get a second opinion in Charlotte, N.C. on Wednesday, but that first reports on his injury were "not encouraging."

Smith refused to give specifics on Jones' injury, saying that the team would wait for results of the second opinion before moving forward.  He said if Jones is out, he would be "a tough guy to replace," adding that they would look to Harry Douglas to step up in that scenario. 

The Falcons lost to the Jets 30-28 after Nick Folk kicked a 43-yard field goal on the game's final play.  Atlanta is now 1-4 on the season, with Monday night's loss being their third straight. 

Jones has been a bright spot for the Falcons, leading the team with 41 receptions for 580 yards and two touchdowns in five games.
