Just like there is a perfect time of year to sell things, there is a perfect time of year to buy things.
We are now in the fourth quarter of 2013, and with the biggest shopping event of the year looming on the horizon, it's important to know the best time of the year to buy your necessities and other items, too.
Now's the time to hit your favorite garden store and stock up on everything you'll need for next year. Lawn mowers, trees, shrubs, bulbs, even grills – all these items are being cleared out, to make way for winter gear. However, don't bother with patio furniture. August is the month to save on lawn furniture.
Since the weather is cool, it's the best time to buy an AC unit. Buying your HVAC off-season is a great way to save on expensive heating and cooling units. Which means you should wait until spring to buy a new furnace.
October is also the best month to buy tires and other car care supplies, according to About.com. About.com also recommends buying jeans in October. I recommend checking out consignment shops like Nu Look Consignment, Turn Style, and Clothes Mentor for a huge selection of designer jeans at non-designer prices.
And if you're in New York, October is off-season for Broadway. That means those expensive Broadway tickets are now actually reasonably priced. Not cheap, but reasonable!
This month brings the granddaddy of all shopping days – Black Friday. You'll save on electronics, computers, cameras, cookware, and tools; all those items you associate with a typical Black Friday sale.
But in November, you'll also save on random things like wedding dresses. Winter weddings aren't as popular as spring and summer, so the wedding industry takes a hit. That means you'll save on the most important dress ever. To save even more on your dress, check out consignment wedding shops like Brides of France in Edina, and Classy Consignment in Anoka.
And for the most random thing to buy in November, according to About.com, it's the month to buy aluminum foil. I can only imagine because it figures largely in the Thanksgiving food-making process…
Since winter is just getting started in December, you probably aren't thinking about summer. But winter is the best time to buy expensive summertime items like swimming pools and golf clubs. Granted, it's hard to break ground on an in-ground pool in the middle of winter. Golf clubs, on the other hand, don't take up a ton of room. So stock up on golf gear now, and be ready when the greens are finally ready for you.
In an odd twist of "cheaper due to high demand," December is also the best time to buy champagne.
And last, the fourth quarter is the best time to buy cars and appliances. Stores and dealers are clearance-ing out last year's models to make way for the new.
