Psych eval ordered for Shelby Twp. mom charged in toddler's death

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

A judge ordered a psychological evaluation Tuesday of Audrionna Rhoades, the Shelby Township mom charged in the death of her 2-year-old son. The order came during a preliminary exam.

Police say her son, James Nelson, was left to die in a minivan for more than 10 hours as the sun beat through the windows. It happened at the Dequindre Estates Mobile Park near Hamlin and Dequindre.

Police say Rhoades strapped James into his car seat on the morning of Sept. 3 and then left in another vehicle to go to work. James remained in the van until Rhoades' roommate noticed his foot though the window of the van around 6 p.m. that evening.

He was rushed to Beaumont Hospital and pronounced dead.

Rhoades was arrested and charged three weeks later with second degree murder and child abuse.

Her next court date is still to be determined.
