Students at Verrado High are cheering for a victory today -- but not on the football field. They found out today they're one of five finalists in a contest to get pop singer Katy Perry to perform at their school.

We first brought you the story last week and showed you the video they made.

This morning they learned they're one step closer to winning.

The pretty petite blonde in the video is Verrado High School senior Megan Squire, a young woman who has gained nationwide attention.

"I am super excited!" says Megan.

Her friends, members of the film and broadcast class, put together the video she stars in -- a story of strength, courage and perseverance, much like Katy Perry's song Roar.

"She's just an incredible example of that, even if you have trials in your life you can overcome them and be who you really want to be," says Clay Mueller, high school student.

The project came together in response to Katy Perry's challenge to all high schools.

Lyric: "I am a champion and you're gonna hear me roar."

"The contest was to take her song Roar and put together a two minute video. We kicked around some ideas in our film class and Clay really wanted to take this assignment on. We got an idea and he just rolled with it," says teacher Jay Weinman.

"She's really sweet she always brings a smile to everyone's face and she's really fun to be around," a classmate told FOX 10.

In real life, Megan has been on the cheerleading team all four years. Many call her the squad's heart and soul.

As of Monday morning, the video posted by Verrado had close to 80,000 views on YouTube. The students are certain they will win.

"It tells a story and it's unique. I think we will!"

The kids find out this week, October 10th, if they win.

If Verrado is chosen, the Katy Perry concert will take place October 25th at their school.
