DC police open Tactical Village training facility

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Few things prepare an officer for the real thing. But this comes awfully close.

D.C. police opened a new warehouse-sized facility in southwest called the Tactical Village.

Inside this building the size of an aircraft hangar, D.C. Police have built a facility that can double as a neighborhood with streets, stores, and even a simulated police station.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier showed off the place this week to the mayor, reporters and other city officials.

In one demonstration, a member of the emergency response team rappels down the outside of the building and turns himself upside down to look inside a window.

In another, a K9 officer shows how his dog reacts when a suspect begins assaulting him.

The building, which has been built on the grounds of the training academy, took years to design, guided along by the D.C. Police foundation, a nonprofit support group.

No, officers have a state of the art training facility rivaling few others.

An all-weather facility where officers can learn how to handle whatever their instructors dream up.
