Carrie Tollefson talks TC Marathon prep at the start line

Posted: Updated:

Todd walker waits at the starting line of the Twin Cities Marathon and speaks with Minnesota running hero Carrie Tollefson who ran her very first marathon on Sunday.

Thousands of runners tromped around the Metrodome before an 8 a.m. starting gun before taking to 6th Street and heading down Hennepin Avenue toward Lake of the Isles. Runners brush Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet all before the half-marathon marker at Lake Nokomis, where they'll continue down Minnehaha Parkway and travel north up the Mississippi River. Shortly after crossing the river by the University of Minnesota campus, tired legs will hit that proverbial "wall" at mile 20, and as if their feet weren't already aware, the mile is marked with a giant inflatable brick wall. Finally, participants continue down East River Road and venture to Summit Avenue and a welcomed downhill brings them to the Capitol grounds.

Olympian and Minnesota native Carrie Tollefson is a middle-distance runner but is running her first marathon Sunday morning in her home state after giving birth mere months prior. Tollefson won the 1500 meters in the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2004, and hopes to complete the TC Marathon in under 3 hours -- that's just under a 7 minute-per-mile pace.
