Light Rain Continues through the Weekend, Snow Blasts Neighbors to the West

Posted: Updated:

Plenty of rain falling across the Upper Midwest over the last few days which is really good news for the drought as very dry locations are receiving plenty of much needed water. But our neighbors to the west are receiving snow… and not just a few inches but a few feet! What a difference a day makes… we received these pictures from one of our Fox9 viewers, Jennifer Haugan Ceynar, showing a picture of the Deadwood area the day before the storm and the day of the storm. (The image to the right is what I-90 looked like early Saturday morning in the Black Hills)

The Deadwood area has seen upwards of 2 feet of snow, and snow will continue through Saturday. Before all is over, the Black Hills of South Dakota will have received 2 to 4 feet of snow. But they aren't the only ones getting dumped on with heavy snow falling from the western Dakotas into Wyoming, Colorado, and Montana… check out some of the biggest totals.

For those with any travel plans to the west, I-90 remains closed in the western half of South Dakota and much of Wyoming and could be closed until Monday.

Around here though, to the relief of many (myself NOT included) it's been all rain with plenty of it in some cases. Much of the metro has missed out on the heavy rain, but many locations still coming in with 1-2 inches Metrowide. Meanwhile, parts of southern Minnesota and southwest Wisconsin are topping 3 and 4 inches. Here is a peek at some of the buckets across the area.

To fill in some of the blanks and see in between the buckets, we use radar to find estimated totals based on the radar image that gets reflected back to the radar. We add some color to those estimates, and poof… we get rainfall estimates from the area.

Some of the truly desperate spots for water missed out on the bulk of the moisture with the heaviest rain pounding parts of Wisconsin and far southeastern Minnesota, but every little bit helps even though more is needed. Looks like the rain will stay light the rest of this weekend and there is a pretty dry week ahead.
