Credit Card Skimming By NJ Gas Station Workers Alleged

STRATFORD, N.J. -

At least 50 people have been the victims of high-tech credit card fraud, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

The alleged crime scene? An Exxon gas station in Stratford.

The method? A process known as skimming.

That's when thieves use small devices to record credit card numbers when they are processed in an ATM or as a form of electronic payment.

"It's heartbreaking to think that somebody would do that to another person," said Beth, who wanted her last name withheld.

She told FOX 29 News exclusively she learned about the crime after getting a call from her credit card company saying someone tried to use her card to buy a $2,700 refrigerator.

"We tracked it back to the date when the fraudulent charges started and we were able to pin it down to the gas station we went to," Beth said.

She said someone also made a variety of purchases at Macy's, Target and Sears stores totaling more than $500. She said the company did not hold them responsible for the items bought.

Camden County investigators arrested two workers and charged them in the crimes. However, they were released pending future court appearances.

A third man identified as Mark Chamberlain, of Philadelphia, was also arrested and jailed. Prosecutors believe he may be the ring leader in the case.

Investigators believe more victims are likely to come forward.
