ATLANTA -

Atlanta police and firefighters are frustrated that they haven't gotten a pay raise that has been promised.

Earlier this year, public employees had everyone's attention with a pay protest that included first-responders' wives addressing city council, and billboards put up with a message "First to Respond but Last to get Paid."

Months later, police and firefighters say they're still waiting for the promised extra pay.

"It's frustrating on our members simply because they want it fixed now. They wanted it fixed years ago," said Stephen Borders of the Atlanta Fire Union.

The latest public safety promise is geared toward officers with five years at the force and includes midlevel supervisors. Borders said that officials promised $500,000 would be set aside for public safety workers.

Atlanta City Councilmember Michael Bond, the chair of the Public Safety Panel, said he supports the raise and that it affects worker morale.

"That kind of negative affect spreads throughout the entire department," Bond said. "It's better to have them fully motivated. It's better to have them really at the top of their game every time that they are putting themselves in harm's way, and they need to know when they are facing the dangers and going where angels fear to tread, that we've got their back."

Atlanta Police Union President Ken Allen said he's also trying to be patient. He promised that he'll be at every meeting to make sure the raise gets done.

Atlanta Human Resources Commissioner Yvonne Yancy said she'll have a pay plan delivered to the City Council by the end of the month that will detail how much money is available to spread around and who gets those funds.
