Welcome to World Space Week

Posted: Updated:

The 14th annual "World Space Week" starts today October 4th and runs through October 10th. The week was declared in 1999 by the United Nations as an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. October 4th is a key date when talking space travel because it was the date in 1957 that Sputnik 1, the world's first satellite, was launched by the Soviet Union.

This year's theme (of course there's a theme) is "Exploring Mars, Discovering Earth." Events will focus on how the discoveries on the Red Planet have affected humanity and taught us about our own large rock.

Some of the highlights for the truly nerdy week feature key personnel from the European Space Agency's Mars Express mission discussing what scientists have learned from the spacecraft's 10 years in orbit around the Red Planet in a live Google+ Hangout at 10AM EDT. Also on the docket come Monday October 7th will be an "Ask Me Anything" session with Commercial Spaceflight Federation president Michael Lopez-Alegria on Reddit. Even though the majority of the celebrations will be taking place in other countries, there are a few events happening in the U.S. For a complete list, you can check out the World Space Week website. And if those are too far, then maybe just take a moment sometime in the coming week to stop and marvel the beauty of our surroundings and try to grasp just how BIG space really is.
