Grandmont home firebombed 12 times in two months

Posted: Updated:

Residents of Detroit's Grandmont neighborhood want something done about the house that, they say, has been firebombed twelve times in two months.

"I mean it's terrorism - it's actually an act of terrorism," Muhsin Muhammad tells Fox 2's Amy Lange. Muhammad is president of Grandmont's neighborhood patrol. "We're trying to preserve life. Just next door - to the north of this house - two little girls were asking their mother, 'Could they sleep in their shoes?' because they feared there would be a fire that night."

Muhammad says it started in July when gang members, who had been staying at the home, were evicted. He says that night someone came back and tore the boards off the windows, and the destruction has not stopped since.

One night the property was hit twice. The house was hit first and the fire department came and put out that fire, then a few hours later the garage went up in flames. Even the firefighters say they are frustrated. They've had three men get hurt fighting fires at this address.

"We still got to protect the neighbors. It's occupied all over, so we've still got to protect the houses around," Charlie Matter, a Detroit firefighter, says.

"Tear it down and get it out of the way. You got to do something," Herbert Bonner says. He lives in the area. He wants to see the house demolished before anyone else gets hurt.

No date for demolition has yet to be set, though. Meanwhile arson investigators say they need the public's help. A reward of up to $5,000 is offered for information on the case.

If you have that information, call 1-800-44-ARSON (1-800-442-7766).
