Getting Results: PHA-Owned Hollywood Street Home Crumbling

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Compared to other vacant houses, this one rowhome on the 1200 block of Hollywoood Street doesn't appear to look that bad.

But you don't have to live next to it. Noreen Johnson and her sick mother don't have any choice.

The house, which is owned by the Philadelphia Housing Authority is crumbling, and neighbors say it's causing problems in their own homes.

According to Johnson, no one has lived in the home since 1989. She says 25 years of rotting connected to hers is now causing major problems in her home.

The first problem is the tree roots coming up through the concrete floor in her basement. Those trees are growing through the roof of the house.

Then there's the black mold growing on the wall just inches from the bed where Noreen Johnson sleeps at night.

She also says that when PHA crews did show up after calling, they damaged her cinderblock wall.

The Johnsons claim all of the problems are being caused by the dilapidated house next door.

We checked property records to find out who owns the property and who is responsible for its upkeep. It didn't take long to find out it's the PHA.

Johnson says she has documented more than a dozen calls to PHA over the last few months. Finally, she called us.

Less than 24 hours after we contacted PHA, a crew responded to the property. A spokesperson tells us they'll take care of the broken wall and send an inspector to look at the roof for leaks.

But PHA also said some of the problems may not be their responsibility.

FOX 29's Chris O'Connell has more details in this video report, we'll keep tabs on PHA's work to let you know what we find out.
