Kristen Schaal: Comedians Have to Be Accessible

Posted: Updated:

"I could rock a Greek tragedy right now!" That's comedian Kristen Schaal joking about her acting range to Steve and Araksya Thursday morning. She can currently be heard but not seen in "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2" and FOX's "Bob's Burgers". Steve asked her about the freedom she voicing animated characters.

"That's the best thing about voiceover, you can't get self conscious because nobody can see you."

Kristen also talked about how she'd been told her voice would hinder her in Hollywood. "In fact I had a voice teacher coach in college who told me to just forget about it...apparently she just knew about drama."

Steve also surprised Kristen with how much he knew about her career and talked about how much he's wanted to get her on the show. "Are you president of my fan club?"

Kristen also talked about what she thinks is important to be a good comedian.

"I think comedians have to have a very unique point of view and that's sort of where the comedy comes from but they also have to be accessible."

Fun Facts About Kristen Schaal (Source: Wikipedia)

  • She is an American actress, voice artist, writer, and comedian, best known for her roles as Mel in the HBO series Flight of the Conchords and as a contributor on The Daily Show. She has also appeared as Louise in Bob's Burgers, Hazel Wassername in 30 Rock, Mabel Pines in Gravity Falls, and Anne in Wilfred.
  • Schaal guest starred on The Simpsons May 8, 2011 episode "Homer Scissorhands" in which she plays Taffy, a love interest of Millhouse. She is incorrectly listed in the credits as Kristen Schall. This prompted Simpsons writers to issue her a unique apology on the next week's episode in which Bart's chalkboard gag in the intro to the show states "It's Kristen Schaal, not Kristen Schall."
  • Schaal wrote a humor book, The Sexy Book of Sexy Sex, with her fiancé (now husband), former Daily Show writer Rich Blomquist. It was published in July 2010 by Chronicle Books. She originally intended for them to write the book under pseudonyms, "because I don't want anyone to imagine me doing those things," but she realized it would be harder to promote the book without using their real names.

‘Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2' is in theaters now. ‘Bob's Burgers' airs Sunday night at 8:30 right here on FOX.
