Ordinance may force KSU students out of home

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -

Some Kennesaw State University students may have to look for a new place to live. A Cobb County ordinance says they have too many unrelated people under one roof.

Caitlin Abshier and four of her classmates rent a home just a few miles from campus. Cobb County law limits the number of adults who can live in a single-family dwelling.

"You can't have more than two unrelated people living in the same home," said Cobb County spokesperson Robert Quigley. "You have situations where people want to put four, five residents in a home into a home that are unrelated adults and it just impacts the quality of life for the neighbors around there."

The law has only been in place about four years. County officials say it was put into place once Kennesaw State starting growing and there were more students looking for a place to live.

With 25,000 KSU students and only a few thousand on campus beds available, the majority of students have to live off campus.

Caitlyn says there are apartments available, but they found splitting the rent of this home five ways was much less expensive. They applied for a zoning request to allow them to live here and hope authorities will see it their way so they can just go back to being college students.

"I'm a senior in college, so I have five senior-level courses, my capstone course right, I'm running my own company -- all this added stress on to everything is just really inconvenient," Abshier said.

The zoning board denied the students' application. The full Board of Commissioners will consider it on Oct. 15.
